9:00 am - 12:00 pm

Water and sunlight feel easy to see, but what's going on underground? Understanding the characteristics of soil can help native plant gardeners make informed decisions when planning what plants to grow, how often to water, and what to do when diagnosing problems. Join CalBG nursery staff members Cedric Johnson and Riley Holmes to learn about the soil we walk on, including:

  • Physical properties of soil. What is soil actually?
  • Chemical properties of soil. How do different soils react with themselves and other elements?
  • Biological properties of soil. How does soil fit into different ecosystems and the biosphere as a whole?
  • Class will also include a discussion of regenerative practices, as well time spent exploring different California native soils, potting soils, restoration soils, examples of soil mixing, and sterilization/pasteurization methods for different applications.

All living things are connected by the earth beneath us. Come and build awareness together about this hidden world!

Class time will include  a small amount of walking at a moderate pace while we visit different soil samples. If you would like a ride to the classroom or through the garden, please let us know.
