We invite you to a formal opening reception of the Sherwin Carlquist exhibit on Thursday, April 2, at 4:00 pm. The reception will include a short talk that highlights Carlquist’s important research and the project, followed by guided tours of the exhibit in the library and selected Carlquist collections in the herbarium. After this evening, the exhibit will only be available to the public by special appointment.
Dr. Sherwin Carlquist (1930–2021) is one of the giants in botany on whose shoulders present day botanists stand. Carlquist leaves behind a rich legacy resulting from over 70 years of botanical research, covering such topics as plant anatomy, evolutionary and ecological theory, flower development, and island biogeography. Over the course of his distinguished career, Carlquist amassed more than 190,000 collection objects, including herbarium vouchers, wood specimens, specimen material preserved in spirits, microscope anatomy slides, photographs, negatives, slides, index envelopes, and field notebooks. These collections were curated and digitized in a collaborative effort between the California Botanic Garden Herbarium and Botanical Research Institute of Texas Library as part of a five-year project funded by the National Science Foundation.
