Class Description:

Discover the quiet beauty of winter branches in this January painting workshop at the California Botanical Garden. During this class, you will focus on using a limited palette of light blues, blacks, and expressive ink lines to capture the elegant shapes revealed only in the colder months. Winter exposes the true architecture of trees, and as one artist wisely notes, “Winter is the best time to study the shape and texture of tree branches. Ice, painted like clear glass, can add contrast and textural variety to the sketch.”

Together with instructor Aleta Jacobson, you’ll explore techniques for suggesting snow-laden limbs, creating luminous icy highlights, and using line work to bring structure and rhythm to your composition. Whether you’re new to painting or looking to expand your observational skills, this class offers a peaceful and inspiring setting to deepen your practice. All supplies are provided—simply come ready to create in the beautiful winter landscape of the Garden.
