Learn to create colorful, unique prints on fabric with local dye plants in this workshop led by artist and naturalist Erin Berkowitz of Berbo Studio. We’ll begin class with a walk through California Botanic Garden, identifying native dye plants and observing signifiers of their latent natural color, discussing responsible wild-crafting, and how and when to harvest color-containing plants (both native and non-native) growing around us.

In class we’ll get creative with locally gathered dye plants, using an eco-printing technique—impressing the shapes of leaves and flowers into fabric and steaming to drawing out their color—to create lasting botanical prints on cotton fabric. You’ll leave with your own unique fabric print created in class, and with the knowledge and techniques to repeat the process on your own at home.

This workshop is suitable for all skill levels, ages 12+.
