iNaturalist Bird Contest

How many bird species can you document at California Botanic Garden this February? Take part in our iNaturalist bird contest for the chance to win a bird themed prize and some CalBG swag! The person who documents the most on iNaturalist during this time will be our winner!

Don’t know how to identify birds? Don’t worry! This is your chance to learn and help contribute to what is known about birds in the Garden. iNaturalist is a friendly community of nature lovers who share observations and learn from each other.

Simply record photos and/or sounds of birds from February 2 - 28 and submit as observations through the iNaturalist website or through the iNaturalist app. Have fun collecting data all the while contributing to the world of science!

Contest Details:

  • Prizes will only be available for local pick-up at CalBG
  • All observations must be submitted to iNaturalist. If you aren’t already familiar with iNaturalist, here are some resources to help you get started.

  •  All observations must be research grade. This means that you have provided enough evidence for the majority of people IDing your observation to agree on the species.
  • All observations must be observed in the garden and iNat observation coordinates should be within the garden boundary. Sometimes GPS coordinates can be off. A quick way to check if your observations are within the garden boundary is to see if they appear here or in the CalBG iNaturalist project devoted to wildlife and fungi in the garden. If your coordinates are wrong or missing, you can fix or add them by editing the observation.
  • Observations can include photos and/or sounds as evidence of the bird, but are not required to have both. The iNaturalist app for Android includes the ability to record sounds. If you don’t have an Android phone, you will have to record the sounds in another app. Tips on other apps and on recording sounds from eBird are here: Smartphone Recording Tips
  •  All observations must be from February 2 - 28, 2021. We will allow one week from the end of this period to allow for identifications to reach research grade. The person with the most bird species with research grade observations in the month of February will be declared the winner on March 5.
